THE GIVER Movie Review

The Giver stars Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a normal boy living in a 'Community.' The communities are virtually perfect; there is no hate, jealousy, physical pain, or war. No one has emotions; only feelings. There is no color (literally) and lying is, "against the rules."

Jonas and his friends Asher (Cameron Monaghan) and Fiona (Odeya Rush) are Elevens, (meaning they are 11 years old) and are soon to go through the ceremony of the Twelves. This is when they are given their life jobs and will be seen as adults.

The day before the ceremony, Jonas is at the 'Nurturing Center', where they take care of newborn babies, when he suddenly sees color in Fiona's hair. Fiona of course, doesn't know what color is, and can't figure out why Jonas is staring at her.

At the ceremony the next day, the Chief Elder (Meryle Streepe), when calling them to the stage to assign them, skips Jonas.  She calls him up last and announces he has not been assigned, he has been selected as the new Receiver of Memory.

Thus begins Jonas' journey.  The movie in and of itself was really a fascinating one.  Humanity is controlled firmly through the Elders (mainly the Chief Elder) and life is bland and predictable. The Receiver of Memory has every single memory THAT EVER EXISTED. Jonas being made the new Receiver, he is now a Giver.

The Giver (Jeff Bridges) is an old man that lives on the edge of the Community. He (and later Jonas) are the only ones who can see color. Jonas is not his first pupil, however. His late apprentice was Rosemary (Taylor Swift). People joke that you see Taylor Swift in the movie for the same amount of time that it takes to play one of her songs.

If you read further, there are spoilers!

Rosemary no longer exists. She has been released to elsewhere. Jonas later learns that means she was murdered. The Giver had (on her demanding) gave her a memory of loss; a child being taken from its mother. Unable to comprehend such a thing after living such a sheltered life, Rosemary is overcome with emotion and requests release. Little does she know, she is asking to be killed.

Jonas is trying to share his training with Fiona. Everyone has injections that take away their emotions. Jonas puts his blood on an apple and puts it over his injection machine. It injects the apple instead. He then gets Fiona to do it.
